Whitecap Canada Inc. Helps GroceryGateway.com Migrate from Oracle to Microsoft SQL Server
Background
Longo Brothers Fruit Markets Inc. (Longo's) is a family owned grocery retail chain with over 21 stores across the Greater Toronto Area. In 2004, Longo's began operating GroceryGateway.com, an online grocery shopping and home delivery service currently serving the GTA.
Challenge
Having previously worked with Longo's to migrate and completely redevelop the Grocery Gateway's web application in .NET, Whitecap was approached to help them migrate Grocery Gateway away from its costly Oracle server back-end while maintaining its existing performance and functionality, and all with minimal service disruption.
Solution
Whitecap worked with Microsoft's SQL Server Migration Assistant to migrate Grocery Gateway from Oracle to MS SQL Server. Although performance of the migrated system was good, Whitecap worked to develop further performance enhancements, exceeding requirements and ensuring that application scalability is equivalent or greater than that provided by an Oracle back-end.
Results
The migration was successfully completed with a total
Grocery Gateway downtime of less than 3 hours. Overall, the costs of running the web application have been reduced significantly by leveraging MS SQL Server and system performance has exceeded that of the previous Oracle-based implementation of the system. The project was completed on
time and on budget, and has exceeded expectations in terms of its success.
