NAV Canada selected Whitecap Canada Inc. to design, build and host an Internet-based application to publish critical wind-related information from Pearson International Airport (PIA) on the World Wide Web.
NAV Canada is the private corporation that owns and operates Canada's civil air navigation service (ANS). With revenues approaching one billion dollars, and over 5,000 employees, NAV Canada co-ordinates the safe and efficient movement of aircraft in Canadian domestic airspace and international airspace assigned to Canadian control. Through its coast-to-coast operations, NAV Canada provides air traffic control, flight information services including weather briefings and airport advisory services, and air navigation and approach aids. NAV Canada has earned a global reputation as a technology innovator and leader in the field of air traffic control.

NAV Canada selected Whitecap Canada Inc. to design, build and host an Internet-based application to publish critical wind-related information from Pearson International Airport (PIA) on the World Wide Web. Data related to wind speed and wind direction is captured in real-time from anemometers at two different locations at PIA. The data is then uploaded to a web server, where the information is presented graphically and available to anyone with access to the web.

The primary users of this information are the airlines operating out of PIA, and residents of the communities surrounding the airport. Real-time access to wind information is important to both these groups, as NAV Canada air traffic controllers use this information to make decisions related to runway selection and usage. Runway selection directly impacts the capacity of the airlines that operate out of PIA, and also the noise level for the surrounding communities. By making this information available via the web, NAV Canada is sharing with these stakeholders the information upon which runway decisions are based.

Whitecap is pleased to have been selected by such an internationally respected technology innovator for this important project, and we look forward to broadening our relationship with NAV Canada over time.
